4 WIRE KELVIN (LOW RESISTANCE TESTING)
4 Wire Kelvin Test or four-terminal resistance measurement method as it is additionally known is used for testing very small resistance of IVH and through holes. It can measure low resistance correctly without being affected by test lead or contact resistance.
For 4 Wire Kelvin Test, there are 2 testing pairs, the first testing pair generates a constant current and the second testing pair measures the voltage. As there is no current flow through the second testing pair, the contact resistance is completely compensated and the “real resistance” of the trace or via hole to measure is precisely determined.
Conventional test use single probe tips which only have one wire and one probe on each tip. For 4 Wire Kelvin Test, dual probe tips which have two wires are two probes on each tip are used.
